The CDP
charts for the first time the history of the cuneiform script from origins
around 3000 BC down to the time of Christ. The Project’s inception was
made possible by seed corn funding from the University for interdisciplinary
research (Assyriology, handwriting analysis, computer engineering) and
it now enjoys major funding from The
Leverhulme Trust as well as official partnership with The
British Museum.
At the heart of the Project is
an electronic corpus of images of the signs or characters that make up
the cuneiform script. Almost one thousand in number, the signs’ precise
appearance varies over space and time, and the CDP charts these variations
and publishes them on the worldwide web. Our work will make a very significant
contribution to the study of the history and culture of the Ancient Near
East.
