Other Collaborative Research Networks (CRNs)

The University is developing the concept of Collaborative Research Networks, and as such, in line with its Research Strategy, 13 CRNs have been created across campus to facilitate inter-disciplinary networking. Each CRN is categorised under one of two possible headings - those being: 'Research Themes' and 'Enabling Technologies'. Further information can be found by visiting the individual CRN websites below.

The main objectives of the CRNs are: the promotion of inter and multi-disciplinary research across campus, to increase awareness of the exciting research currently underway here at the University of Birmingham, with the view to working together on various research projects, thus utilising cross-discipline expertise.  It is anticipated that in response to attractive funding initiatives, more successful bids will be generated.

International collaborative networking and external industrial collaboration on research projects are also desirable.

If you wish to obtain further information about any of the CRNs and/or you would like to discuss how the CRNs can assist you in your area of research, please feel free to contact the respective CRN Champion for your area of interest, as they will be pleased to respond to any of your queries.

Related Research Links

The CRNs welcome requests from interested parties for the shared promotion of CRN activities and objectives, in conjunction with joint research activities across campus. If you have any interesting and relevant activities that you would like the Informatics CRN to promote on this website, please contact us to discuss collaboration.

Centres

CERCIA logo

The Centre of Excellence for Research in Computational Intelligence and Applications

  • Situated within the School of Computer Science, CERCIA was set-up with funding from Advantage West Midlands, and takes the School's world-leading Computational Intelligence research into businesses and industry, helping them become more innovative and competitive.

MeSC logos

MeSC (The Midlands e-Science Centre of Excellence)

  • A virtual centre with its base in the School of Computer Science, MeSC is a component of the UK e-Science Grid that involves a large number of departments from across the Birmingham campus, as well as linking to e-Science activities at the Partner Universities of Warwick, Coventry and Wolverhampton. The focus of the Centre is ‘Modelling and Analysis of Large Complex Systems’.
  • The centre has four primary aims:
    • To provide accessibility and connectivity for the Grid for the Midlands region.
    • To create a focal point for the activity of computational modelling of very large complex systems and a source of relevant expertise for industry.
    • To enable long-term research into numerical algorithms and simulation techniques for the Grid.
    • To foster collaboration between different academic disciplines in science, engineering and industry.
  • The Centre facilities include Access Grid Node (AGN) rooms for virtual conferencing and offers access to several computer clusters and the UK-Light network.
